Bed & Mattress Buyer’s Guide

Buying a bed or mattress is a big decision — you spend a third of your life on it. This guide walks you through everything that actually matters, then points you to our tested picks for every type and budget. No jargon, no pressure.

1. Start with your sleep position

Your dominant sleep position drives the firmness you need. Side sleepers usually want softer, pressure-relieving comfort; back and stomach sleepers need firmer support to keep the spine aligned. If you share a bed, split the difference or choose a medium-firm hybrid. See our sleep position guide and best mattresses for back & neck pain.

2. Pick your mattress type

  • Memory foam — contouring and pressure relief; great for side sleepers and couples (motion isolation). Can trap heat — look for gel or open-cell foam, or see our cooling picks.
  • Hybrid — foam comfort over pocketed coils; balanced support, airflow and edge support. The safest all-rounder for most people.
  • Latex — responsive, durable and naturally cooler; a premium choice.
  • Innerspring — bouncy and breathable, usually the most affordable.

3. Get the size right

Measure your room and think about who (and what pets) shares the bed. Our bed sizes & dimensions chart shows every size from Twin to California King in inches and centimeters, with room-fit advice.

4. Don’t forget the base

A mattress is only as good as what it sits on. Consider a supportive bed frame, a space-saving storage bed, a low-profile platform bed, or an adjustable base for reading, snoring relief and zero-gravity comfort.

5. Match the bed to the sleeper

Shopping for children? Start with our toddler beds, kids’ beds and space-saving bunk beds. Need a bed for guests or a small space? Compare sofa beds, daybeds and Murphy beds.

6. Set a realistic budget

You don’t need to overspend. There are genuinely good options at every price — see our best mattresses under $300 and under $500 roundups. Watch for sleep trials (100+ nights) and warranties (10 years is standard).
